The Orcas Island School District:
The district’s approximately 700 students are served by approximately 55 certificated teachers, 50 classified staff members, a K-8 principal and a half- time High School Principal/ half-time Superintendent. The Orcas Island Elementary School (K-6), the Orcas Island Middle School (7-8) and the Orcas Island High School (9-12) and the OASIS alternative programs for K-8 and high school students are all located on one 45-acre campus in the village of Eastsound on Orcas Island. The Waldron Island School, located on nearby Waldron Island, serves approximately thirteen K-8 students and is one of eleven designated “Remote and Necessary” sites in Washington state. The district offers a 180-day base contract plus supplemental TRI contracts (9% of the base salary) for teachers and any certificated LID days as authorized by the state legislature. Full time certificated salaries range from $33,401 to $62,9551 for the base contract in the current school year. Approved classified positions receive annual Employment Agreements.
The Community:
Orcas Island is 57 square miles of exceptionally beautiful forests, lakes and meadows lying at the end of a one + hour ride via the Washington State Ferry system. Orcas Island is in the San Juan Archipelago in the northwest corner of Washington State. Year round population is approximately 5,000. Summertime contributes an influx of tourists from all parts of the globe. This small community offers an exceptional variety of interests maintained by a diverse population of retirees, artisans, metropolitan refugees and service workers. Orcas boasts a lively performing arts center, various medical clinics and churches, an airport, museum guild, public library, Senior Services Center, a community “FunHouse” for life long learning, as well as other cultural and commercial activities. The District’s long history of passage of M & O levy elections is evidence of the community’s strong ethic supporting education. Many active local service organizations contribute financial and personal support to many school activities.

JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: PAYROLL SPECIALIST
SPECIFICS:
· 0.88 annual FTE, non-represented, year-round, classified position;
· 233 work days, 12 paid holidays and 15 vacation days at 7 hours per day during the term from Sep 1 through Aug 31;
· Starting hourly rate: $16.50
· Medical, dental, vision insurance benefits available, as provided by state funding;
· Participation in the WA DRS retirement plan.
SUPERVISOR: Human Resources and Superintendent
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Working knowledge of general business practices, procedures and office equipment;
2. General knowledge of payroll functions;
3. Ability to follow directions/instruction, with close attention to accuracy and details;
4. Strong communication skills, verbal and written;
5. Excellent computer skills, Proficient in EXCEL;
6. Exhibit a professional demeanor and a strong work ethic
GENERAL PURPOSE:
To accurately perform the functions of the district’s payroll process, as directed, for approximately 150 employees.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform various payroll tasks on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, including:
· Process payroll vendor payments on a timely basis;
· Process W-2s;
· Perform all duties of month end closing; quarterly and annual reporting of employment data;
· Update and prepare benefit information for staff;
· Oversee Time-and-Effort records of staff charged to federal funding;
· Maintain leave accounts in accordance with negotiated union contracts;
· Process and maintain monthly records for paying all substitutes;
· Process and maintain all employee retirement accounts;
· Prepare insurance pooling data according to negotiated union contracts;
· Be prepared to respond to state audits of payroll records;
- Assume other duties as directed by HR and/or the Superintendent.
