This is NOT the final week of the quarter/semester. We have moved finals to next week. See possible schedule at the end of the bulletin.
There will be no half days for finals. It has been noted that we missed four days of school last week and that more time off is not affordable.
We are going to have to make up at least two of the days missed. We may be able to get a state waiver for the other two because the governor called a state of emergency late on January 18th.
There may be more snow between now and the arrival of Spring- hopefully no more days missed….

On Monday, January 23rd, Orcas Island High School will have a regular Monday schedule with all 6 classes
High school finals will be moved to the following week(Jan 30). The schedule will be announced in the bulletin.
Due to the current forecast for snow this morning before a shift to ice pellets and rain, the decision has been made to close all schools on Orcas Island for Friday, January 20th.
Reports from several areas of Island indicate freezing rain and snow have begun to fall, please drive carefully if you do venture out on the roads.
Doe Bay – starts at Shorewood, does not go into Doe Bay. Skips Obstruction Pass; skips Buckhorn.
Orcas – not to Killbrew. start at Laport road. Does not do Mcnallie/Dolphin Bay, waits at kennel. Mt Baker ? – meet bottom of the hill.
Deer Harbor – Start at 4 winds, does not across the bridge on Channel, Does not do Enchanted Forest; N. Beach ? if good.
At this time all Orcas Island Schools (except the Waldron School) are scheduled to start 2-hours late (10:30 am) on Friday, January 20th. There will be no Zero hour classes or breakfast service. Buses will be operating on Snow Routes (these routes will be posted on the district website). Please be aware that the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the San Juan Islands for this evening and tomorrow morning. We will be monitoring the weather and road conditions to ensure that staff and students can safely travel to school from all areas of the Island. Any changes to school status will be made in a timely manner, please check our district website for updates to our school status.
At this point our County Road crews have done an amazing job preparing our local roads and our maintenance department has prepared our buildings for school tomorrow, however with the current forecast for tonight we will proceed with caution.
FYI From: Brendan Cowan, Director of SJC Department of Emergency Management
NWS (National Weather Service) has just issued a winter weather advisory for islands from 6pm to tonight until 10am Friday: http://1.usa.gov/y4SroC Calling for 1-2 inches of snow or perhaps some freezing rain this evening through Friday AM. At this point, I think only way to really predict what’s going to happen is to keep an eye on radar and look out the window frequently.
