Welcome to the Orcas Island SD Health Room - we're here to serve your child!
Here is some useful health-related information for families. If you have specific questions that are not answered here, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school nurse, Cindy Sapp RN, BSN (360) 376-1593, [email protected].
Life Threatening Health Conditions: Many students have health conditions such as bee sting or peanut allergies, severe asthma, diabetes, seizures, or heart conditions that may cause a life-threatening emergency during the school day. These students must have a plan including medication and/or treatment orders in place prior to the first day that they will attend school. Please contact the Cindy Sapp, School Nurse, for the necessary forms or information.
Immunizations: To attend school in Washington, students must show that they are fully immunized, or file an exemption form signed by a parent and a healthcare provider with the school district. Make sure that your children are up-to-date on their immunizations for their age and provide the front office with any updates to boosters or Tdap doses (6th and 7th graders).
Reminder about Medications: All medications that need to be given at school, including prescription and over-the-counter medications must be accompanied by an Authorization for Administration of Medication at School form. The form must be signed by both the parent and the healthcare provider before any medication will be given at school. Authorization forms need to be updated at the start of each new school year. Forms can be obtained on our website or by calling the Health Room.
Emergency Contact Information: Please keep you and your emergency contacts' information up-to-date with the front office. It is extremely important that we have a way to reach you!
When Should I Keep My Child Home?
The most important thing you can do to prevent illness is for you and your child to wash yours hands often with soap and warm water. Remember to keep the school updated with new phone numbers, email addresses, and emergency contacts in case your child becomes ill at school. Any student with the following symptoms must stay home:
These practices also apply to students with COVID-19. Those recovering from COVID are also urged to wear a face covering.
Human Growth & Development Curriculum
-
FLASH : FLASH is a medically accurate, age-appropriate comprehensive sexual health education curriculum. The lessons will promote respectful communication and build skills for healthy relationships. FLASH also contains family homework assignments in which students talk with a family member about the topics covered in class via a prescribed set of questions. Students may come home with questions about the values and expectations you have for them regarding these topics. We hope this will provide a meaningful opportunity for you to talk about these important topics together. A list of topics is listed below. If you have any questions or would like to preview a lesson, please click on the above link. Should you choose to "Opt Out" your child from these lessons, please contact me at [email protected].
